What is NGO?

Definition of NGO – Non-Governmental Organisation:
Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) or Non Profit Organisation (NPO) is a group, an organisation, a nonprofit establishment or a nonprofit entrepreneurship of individuals, activists, voluntary and social persons. NGO or NPO is a social voluntary organisation of social activists, group of persons, community, persons, volunteers, civilians and citizens who are working or associated for social welfare and social development. If a group of people or a community wants to work for social change on certain issues, it can work as an NGO without getting registration. In other words, NGOs can be registered or be unregistered. NGOs are recognized in their registered form and can get all kinds of support, including financial support when they are registered by Government registration authorities. NGO can be run, managed and operated by the members and other persons who are associated with it and work for social and ethical objects.

What is NGO : NGO as a association includes groups and institutions with primary humanitarian and co-operative objectives rather than commercial objectives completely or widely independent from Government. NGOs are private agencies that can support development at local, national and international level by organizing indigenous groups. NGOs as citizen groups raise awareness and influence policies and include independent cooperatives, community associations, societies, groups and various other associations.
NGOs work for the betterment and upliftment of socio-economically and politically weaker sections of the community to improve their status in society so they can have equal rights and opportunities. Such organisations can contribute develop the society towards an improved and developed way of living and existence. As a community group and organisation, NGO provides and fulfills certain services, development oriented tasks and works with aims and objectives to bring about required positive changes in society, community, areas and situations.

NGO can be registered through any registration process including Trust in the form of Charitable Trust, or Society, Non Profit Company or any other kind of Social Service Organisation under the applicable rules and laws of the concerned state and country. NGO (Non Governmental Organisation) is also called Non Government Organization (NGO), Non Profit Organisation (NPO). Social Organisation, Charitable Organisation, Social Service Organisation, Social Welfare Organisation, Social Development Organisation, Voluntary Organisation, Civil Society Organisation, Community Based organisation or by other names. In general, it is a type of social welfare organisation that works for common welfare and development.
NGO helps and supports people for their rights and legal powers in the society. NGO supports, monitors and puts a check on status of Government organisations, ministries, departments, agencies, authorities for the aims, tasks, rules and purpose for which they form and operate. This is done in a legal and democratic way and with the participation of the people to fulfill common interests. NGOs are known and work for people’s participation in various required issues and tasks to support and improve the circumstances, conditions and situations.

NGO is managed by the resources, funds and other kinds of desirable support from the Government, funding agencies, support agencies, support communities, and with the help and support of business groups and people. NGO can get help to run by a variety of sources, including charging member fees, private donations, grants, sales of goods and services. NGO as charitable and religious associations manages private funds for development, distribution of food, clothes, medicines, equipments, facilities and tools to needy persons and communities. NGOs are nonprofit organisations by nature do not work for trade or business purpose but may profit through the sales of goods and services; these profits are then used for their aims and objectives. NGO is non profit making organisation, working for no profit and no gain so it is also known and identified as Non Profit Organisation (NPO).
